First off even using the word ‘actress’ is now classed as a demeaning word in certain groups opinions? For what it’s worth, I don’t know and don’t care! In my mind there is nothing whatsoever derogatory or discriminatory referencing someone as a waitress, a stewardess etc when speaking about a female in a role.
Anyway that is by the by; the point I wanted to discuss is that these talented individuals at drama school show great adaptability at playing different characters, ….basically gifted at personifying people other than themselves. They often have incredible gift of mimicry and are often capable of fantastic impressions and impersonating other people.
So actors are generally employed on the above basis, to play the part of a character. They normally get cast in a part based on their talent/skill set to perform this task. It’s a basic necessity and criteria for an actor/actress job description is exactly as described above.
Of course sometimes the other part is good looks, after all they are on screens and billboards 50 ft tall, so being beautiful/handsome will help. Being entertaining on chat shows also helps.
Recent millennials have frequently gotten themselves in a spin if some actor/actress or other has been cast to play someone other than themselves. They appear to have missed the general concept of that job, which simply put is play acting for a living.
Down the years men have played women, women have played men, whites have played black characters and vice versa. Recently the woke brigade have seemed beyond flabbergasted when a straight person has been cast as gay, a trans role has gone to a straight actor, or the part of a disabled person has been given to someone not disabled.
What next? Halle Berry is the wrong shade of skin colour for the part? A brunette can’t play a blonde? Only actors over 6’6” can play Jack Reacher?
You don’t need to get an SAS guy for the role of a sniper just because he actually could kill someone from a mile away. The SAS guy’s training is in guns, he won’t get that from the Royal Shakespeare Company. Perhaps he could go to drama school to get his but in gaining his Equity card he might lose his sharpness with a rifle. No doubt some groups would send Tom Cruise as a replacement without seeing the irony of stupidity.
Jeez I just don’t know what to do apart from laugh out loud at these idiots and thank them for making the rest of us feel incredibly intelligent!
With that line of thinking the profession of acting becomes largely redundant. Political correctness means they are unable to use their talent. It also means you would have people with less ability and talent (still acting) playing the role so the audience would be forced to endure a much worse performance which would produce a much poorer piece of work.
Acting is ‘playing pretend’ let’s keep it simple shall we?
