I’ve long been suspicious of Laura Kuenssberg and the BBC’s news agenda both as an individual and the organisation. No matter what the news topic they seem to always aim for a negative slant. The problematic, fear led scaremongering doom merchants seem to look for an angle in even the most joyous occasions.
This was highlighted perfectly when she went along to interview the Chancellor Rishi Sunak on the day he extended the furlough scheme, bringing welcome relief to millions. This guy is our absolute saviour and most favourite person in the world, we are all indebted to his unprecedented gesture which has taken massive worries away in this horrendous time and he is literally paying our wages. No other country has put such a generous offer up for so many of the population; it really is an amazing move.
Laura’s utter predictably and banal line of reporting meant she decides to go at him about what might happen with all those who won’t make ends meet after the scheme ends?!!It was priceless, comical and showed up exactly her limited avenue of default line always is.
The BBC generally seems to run in a similar vein. I had to laugh tonight when even the bloody weather report had the tone of doom when we look to be heading for the next few days of lovely weather 21 to 26 degrees right until Thursday. The forecast summary said something about “cooling down and turning cold into the weekend”. That typically sums up perfectly what I mean, they seem only to focus on any snippet of negativity they can find.
I genuinely wish they did not concentrate every story lead with a negative. We are constantly hit by failings and problems which is just depressing when it is constant. Furthermore it is actually boring and banal and just too predictable. Andrew Marr is sadly the same with dull, predictable questions all aimed at trying to get a guest to contradict what they may have said 5 years ago in a whole new and very different set of circumstances…I just find it such a limited and lazy tactic for supposedly intelligent people.
The BBC is good at reporting and highlighting anxieties, depression and a whole raft of other mental health issues. My feeling is that the constant battering from their own news reports is probably largely responsible for creating them!
It’s bizarre because their BBC Breakfast show is actually my preferred watch on a morning. Louise and Dan make it run along nicely in tone with a light, bright, positive and refreshing atmosphere, perfect for first thing in the morning and certainly my choice over the awful ear battering on ITV which is loud, gossipy, combative and utterly predictable. It is clear the BBC have made a conscious effort to steer away from it on a morning show but it appears they still want to go along that tone with their news bulletins and content on its own NEWS channel. Shame.
