Years ago I remember Phillip Schofield made the revelatory announcement
It that he had been hiding the fact he was actually GREY….and at that time many commented that they thought they had misheard him! So this years news wasn’t exactly a big shock.
Firstly he has been getting a fair bit of consistent negative publicity about his alleged rude, bullying behaviour and attitude toward a number of female colleagues, even Holly. No smoke without fire when it gets to several separate ‘spats’. Maybe he felt coming out might be seen as a way to perhaps justify and offer an explanation to those he had upset without actually having to apologize to any of them. He will now be judged to have been struggling with inner demons and I imagine the complaints will now be forgotten and excused.
The guy is ambitious, can be arrogant and bullish interviewing guests and has a big ego. He has always wanted to be the King of ITV but Ant & Dec’s domination has left him in their shadow, but that doesn’t stop him thinking he’s the King of Daytime. Reports suggested he was expecting to be first choice to stand in for Ant for the jungle job, so Dec choosing Holly must have irked him immensely.
Some would say he’s come out now to boost his profile. He announced it on his own Instagram page and then just a couple of hours later ITV gave him a 15 minute spot to talk about it, repeating his statement. Certainly being gay is currently the ‘on-trend’ group that TV execs seems to be promoting so I imagine he will now be hoping this opens more doors for his career.
There is also the angle that perhaps it has just gotten to the point it was making him ill. He talked about his ‘head’ but he looks very skinny, almost gaunt so perhaps it has been physically and emotionally damaging him keeping his ‘secret’. This puts him into the ‘mental health’ bracket which is another strong group to be currently associated with on TV. It opens the door to so many opportunities to get more work.
Timing wise he had no real need to drag his wife and two daughter’s lives into the spotlight; so he has timed this to perfection for the purpose of hitting several of the ‘buzz’ demographics representing a whole host of woke sympathies and politically correct support. So all this now makes him a bit of a bandwagon jumper who TV execs will be clambering to use because his name now ticks so many more boxes than he did as a straight guy without any inner turmoil. TV demographics are miles away from representing real life stats.
No doubt his family, home and personal life will be different now but I suspect he will enjoy an even higher profile which he wants. In his personal life I hope he is happier and a burden has now being lifted
