Almost 20 years ago I used to watch the Jessica Alba TV series ‘Dark Angel’. At that time, it was an interesting story and show for various reasons.
She played the lead role which was a genetically modified child soldier (part cat DNA) called X5-452, also known as Max, who years earlier had escaped from the mysterious Manticore laboratory/barracks.
The story itself was set in the future, there had been an electromagnetic ‘pulse’ bomb 10 years earlier had wiped out most tech and banking which left the majority of Americans living in depression era poverty and only the rich still having access to luxury. The urban vibe was set by the soundtrack of Chuck-d and Garry G-Wiz which really enhances the rough, tough, gritty Seattle streets making for the perfect backdrop.
The story starts with Max trying to make an honest living staying incognito as a bike messenger working for the Jam Pony Express, run by a crazy guy called Normal. Her fellow bike couriers are ‘Original Cindy’,‘Sketchy’ and ‘Herbal’, after work they go to Crash, a bar that plays motorsport on screens the whole time. When Max isn’t with them, she uses her skills to burgle rich people homes.
She uses the cash to run her black Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle as well as continuing to pay an unsuccessful private investigator to keep trying to find any of the others who escaped the night she did. It was during a burglary at his home that she meets Logan, super rich socialist with a secret identity of ‘Eyes Only’ the guy with the knowledge, money, and tech to hack computers and TV station to broadcast untraceable bulletins exposing corruption and wrong doings by authorities and major criminals in the city.
The bike messengers have sector passes to gain access to all areas of the city, which are monitored by the sector police and drones. Together Max and Logan start to work together and help each other which is the base premise of each episode generally. Other characters in the show include Col. Lydecker, the tough military vet tasked with hunting down the Manticore escapees. Joshua and Alex are other super-soldier experiments from the project (Joshua is part dog).
Funnily enough I recently saw an episode on TV and hadn’t realised it was actually set in 2019! The show lasted 2 seasons and played a huge part in Jessica Alba’s future career.
Apart from the story of the drama the other interesting thing about the show is it was co-created, produced, scripted and I believe he even directed the odd one…...by mega movie director and Oscar winner James Cameron. At the time he was coming off the back of associations with the Terminator movies, Alien, True Lies and Titanic, so it was a surprising move for him to switch to TV. It is not hard to see the Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley traits manifested themselves into Max’s characterisation because of the Cameron connection.
