North Americans hold firm on their “right to bear arms” based on what was said in the year 1791. At that time the country had come off the back of hundreds of years of battles with Native Americans, then the Dutch, the French, the Spanish and the British. Still relatively a ‘frontier’ landscape the founding fathers intention were understandably keen on no more troubles from other groups, so had the timely idea of the population as an armed militia and a town Sherriff. Fast forward more than two hundred and twenty five years later America is completely unrecognisable and more importantly so are the capabilities of the ‘arms’ described in the second amendment.
Specifically some 40 odd years after the 2nd amendment was written the USA started to form the first basis of their own law enforcement; this game changer was the introduction of policing and a police force. Subsequent years saw the creation and refinements of law enforcements, the judicial system, courts, judges, jails and prisons. Further levels of law enforcement agencies were created to specialise in any and every type of criminal and crime imaginable either at county, state or federal levels. All of these progressive additions to American civilized society means there is really no need at all for citizens to have guns anymore.
The other aspect in the US particularly with the issue of mass shootings is the calibre, capabilities of the semi/automatic weapons available and the damage they can do. Remember the Las Vegas shooter 2017? 58 dead and over 400 injured in a 10 minute spree. No matter how crazy a guy goes with a knife, it cannot compare with firearms.
With cars/roads for example, we realise if the drivers go too fast and cause accidents and introduce speed limits and maybe even further reductions after review. If junctions become accident blackspots traffic lights or roundabouts may be devised. We restrict youths by classes to certain size motorcycles or horsepower to keep them safe. We wear seat belts, manufacturers put airbags in cars, bikers wear helmets.
The NRA say guns keep people safe, but stats say the very opposite. The US population has a domestic crisis because they are killing each other in huge numbers, unbelievably the gun casualty numbers within the US by US citizens is significantly higher than what terrorism and military conflicts have managed.
So you have to conclude there is something seriously out of kilter with the American psyche. Not all Americans of course because almost one third admit to never even firing a weapon and 30% also say they do not own a gun. Oddly enough only one third of US citizens say they own guns, but as it is the most weaponized country in the world it is safe to say those who do own a lot of them!
Gun laws seem untouchable, even protected by the people and communities been torn apart by them.
